To wrap up the Fall 2025 Mathical Readathon, we feature two books about birds — and counting!
Pigeon Math is a wonderfully silly story about pigeons who cannot sit still to be counted by the story’s narrator. Bird Count is based on a neighborhood bird census: noting and recording the number of different kinds of birds seen on a hike together.
Activities for Readers
- Can you measure the height of your house in dinosaurs? The free Measure! Everything! iOS app by MathTalk, available in English and Spanish, encourages young children’s math exploration of the real world around them using the device’s camera feature.
- Prepare for the Great Backyard Bird Count in February. This is a free global event organized by The Cornell Lab, Audubon, and Birds Canada, where your class can participate by watching birds for 15 minutes or more, at least once over the four days period of February 13-16, 2026. Share your observations to help estimate wild bird populations in your area.
- Try measuring your pets at home with Bedtime Math and PBS! Learn how you can find the length and height of your pets in inches and feet and their weight in ounces and pounds.
- Play fun math games & share stories in English and Spanish with MathMINDs (MIND Research).
- Older readers may also enjoy learning about the Great Elephant Census & how scientists use data collection in the field to protect our animal friends. Free classroom activities and educator guides are included.
